Dr Jan Lindsay | Volcanoes in the big smoke
MP3, 15m25s, 14.1MB, first broadcast 24 August 2010
Dr Jan Lindsay is a volcanologist in the School of Environment and Institute of Earth Science and Engineering (IESE). She is interested all aspects of volcanoes, from the materials they deposit at the earth’s surface to the hazards they pose.
Auckland is built on a potentially-active field of around 50 volcanic centers and the most recent eruption 550 years ago created Rangitoto Island. Although Auckland’s volcanoes are small and do not erupt often, the concentration of people and economic activity in the region means that they present a real danger.
Jan is part of the seven-year DEVORA project to improve our understanding of the Auckland Volcanic Field. She recently toured the country talking about how scientists use information from past eruptions to predict future volcanic events in Auckland, how the city’s volcanoes are monitored, and how we can measure the risk they present to lives, property, and economic activity.
