Later in the month, Homestead Galleries is presenting This Raw Material, an exhibition featuring contemporary wool craft and bespoke creations by Liz Mitchell (MNZM).

Liz Mitchell holds a prominent position in Aotearoa New Zealand's fashion industry. With her specialisation in bespoke tailoring, she has devoted nearly three decades to harnessing the inherent beauty, adaptability, and enduring qualities of wool. Her unwavering dedication has established wool as the cornerstone of her design philosophy.

Spanning all three rooms of Homestead Galleries, the exhibition encourages visitors to embrace strong wool in Aotearoa as an integral part of their daily lives, fostering a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle.

To hear about the exhibition, Frances caught up with Liz for Various Artists.

With the election campaign coming to a close tomorrow, we’ve seen a pretty extreme lack of conversation from the majority of politicians in Aotearoa.

This has led to a lot more artist lead action across the motu, with various campaigns calling for stronger support for the creative sector.

One of these advocates is Judy Darragh, who Liam spoke with about the election, the lack of arts coverage, and how to respond.

Opening next Friday at Michael Lett Gallery is Nirvana Park by Dan Arps.

The exhibition is inspired by the various industrial reserves found around Tāmaki Makaurau, particularly the titular Nirvana Park found in Lynfield.

The sculptures in the exhibition aim to combine the desolate atmosphere of these reserves and ask about what else these spaces could be used for.

We’re currently a week away from the Aotearoa general election, and the majority of parties still don’t actually have a clear arts and culture policy.

It’s been a bit of an apathetic mood for arts in politics, with Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown threatening to cut back the funding for our local arts centres.

We also saw only one politician show up to the APRA Silver Scrolls on Wednesday Night, and unsurprisingly it was Chlöe Swarbrick.

Thankfully, after we reached out to each major party, Chloe was also the only MP willing to chat to us about their arts and culture policy! We recorded this during Fancy New Band, so sorry about the surfy backing track.

The show me shorts film festival is starting up today, showcasing all sorts of local and international filmmaking talent.
One of those includes the film Proof, written, directed, and produced by Jonny Brugh.

The film tells a story of a grieving man desperately trying to find evidence of an afterlife, at any cost.
Liam had a chat with Jonny about the film, which will be showing as a part of the ‘When The Spirit Takes Flight’ compilation.

Frances' first guest for ArtWeek is Victoria Gancheva from the University of Auckland School of Architecture and Planning who are presenting a bunch of creative, interactive installations at Urban Art Village. Victoria is presenting a work called ‘Past is Prologue’, a multimedia performance that reimagines Shakespeare’s The Tempest and explores the role of memory in our perception of the world.

Phil Elverum is the primary songwriter, performer, and producer for  Mount Eerie and The Microphones. For around 27 years, Phil has been creating some of the most revered and critically acclaimed indie folk of all time. His music veers between stripped back acoustic guitar recordings, to terrifyingly loud and distorted sonic experiments.

Mount Eerie is currently on the verge of a return to Aotearoa, playing  in Tāmaki Makaurau, Pōneke, and Ōtepoti with Black Belt Eagle Scout - another band from Washington State that will bring new and classic Mount Eerie tunes to a new, full band soundscape.

I’ve been obsessed with the music of The Microphones and Mount Eerie since I was fourteen. I think I had the Glow Part 2 album cover as my profile picture on Google for about four years, so suffice to say it was a real privilege to interview him. We had a yarn about the upcoming shows, his previous tours of Aotearoa, twenty years of the Mount Eerie name, and more.
